The Bengal files (2025)

The Bengal Files: Right to Life is the third installment of Agnihotri’s controversial “Files Trilogy”, following The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files.Set against the tumultuous backdrop of Bengal around the time of India’s partition, the film weaves together a contemporary thriller with flashbacks to some of the bloodiest episodes of communal violence in eastern India — notably Direct Action Day (16 August 1946) in Calcutta and the Noakhali riots

Story
The Bengal Files (2025) tells the story of Shiva Aloke Pandit, a CBI officer sent to Bengal to investigate the disappearance of Gita Mandal, a Dalit journalist from Murshidabad. What begins as a simple missing-person case gradually exposes layers of political corruption, illegal immigration, communal tensions, and systemic oppression. As Shiva digs deeper, he uncovers truths that many in power want to keep buried. Alongside the present-day investigation, the film flashes back to some of the most brutal events in Bengal’s history, including Direct Action Day in Calcutta (1946) and the Noakhali riots, depicting large-scale massacres, forced conversions, rapes, and displacements of Hindus. These historical memories connect to present realities, showing how past violence continues to shape Bengal’s social and political landscape. Dark, intense, and graphic, the film presents itself as both a political thriller and a historical exposé, aiming to remind viewers of a “forgotten genocide” while questioning the erasure of painful truths from mainstream narratives.
